17/03/2023On Saturday 18th, BACKTOBLU organised the Beach clean-up in Kostrena, as part of the World Clean-up Day!
Our dear colleagues from shipping Industry – Association of Ship Brokers and Agents of Croatia, Adriatic Ship Supply Agency, Express Global, Sailing Club Galeb Kostrena and the Faculty of Management in Tourism and Hospitality in Opatija, joined this project in order to raise awareness about the environmental issues, and to promote sustainable solutions to preserve the natural marine environment.
World Clean-Up Day is one of the biggest civic movements of our time, uniting 180 countries across the world for a cleaner planet under the slogan “Let’s Do It – let’s clean the Earth in 1 day”. This year, more than 50 million volunteers from 180 countries took part in environmental actions worldwide.
Our beach clean-up was focused on collecting cigarette butts in glass jars and beach litter. After plastic bags, disposable cutlery and straws, cigarette butts have been declared the new biggest enemy of the environment! Although this waste is not that noticeable, but due to its plastic content it does major damage to the marine environment. While decomposing (more than 10 years ) cigarette buds release harmful substances into the soil and / or water breaking down into microplastics, which animals replace for food and die from the effects of suffocation or entanglement.
4 beaches in Kostrena were cleaned of plastic waste and cigarette buds, and all participants were rewarded with BACKTOBLU t-shirts & meal cooked by Liburnia team. Our dear ambassador Klara Mladenic held the presentation about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who joined this project and the volunteers who helped us clean the beaches.
See you in our next clean-up project!
BACKTOBLU team!
