Third place for BACKTOBLU team at Grobnička regatta
19/06/2023BACKTOBLU: Preserving Nature Through Sport and Education
11/04/2024On Saturday, the 16th, BACKTOBLU once again orchestrated a Beach Clean-up in Kostrena, reaffirming our ongoing dedication to environmental stewardship. This initiative was in collaboration with the World Clean-up Day, a global movement uniting 180 countries in the mission to achieve a cleaner planet under the slogan “Let’s Do It – let’s clean the Earth in 1 day”.
Our valued partners from the shipping industry, Jadranski pomorski servis, lent their support to our cause. Together, we sought to not only clean up the beaches but also to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and advocate for sustainable practices to preserve the marine ecosystem.
The focus of our beach clean-up efforts extended beyond general litter to specifically target cigarette butts, which are increasingly recognized as a significant environmental hazard alongside plastic bags, disposable cutlery, and straws. The harmful plastic content of cigarette butts poses a serious threat to marine life. These seemingly innocuous items, though small in size, release harmful substances into the environment as they decompose over a period exceeding 10 years. Ultimately, they break down into microplastics, posing a grave risk to marine organisms through ingestion or entanglement.
In addition to the beaches, our dedicated volunteers also cleaned the premises of Sailing klub Galeb, ensuring that the surrounding areas were free from litter and debris.
As a token of our appreciation, all participants received BACKTOBLU t-shirts and enjoyed a barbecue generously provided by the Liburnia team.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all participants and volunteers whose contributions made this event a resounding success. Together, we eagerly anticipate continuing our efforts in future clean-up projects, as we strive towards a cleaner and healthier marine environment.
